I'm wondering if it would make any sense to run LR 5.7 and attempt to update all the way to 6.14 from there, or would I get myself into even worse trouble? Of course I have my licenses back for several versions, including 6.x and 5.x. I have an alternate idea that likely won't work, but I'll throw it out there or, more likely, just throw it out: I still have an exe file for LR 5.7, but I don't know if that was a simple fix or a full update.

Should I simply ("simply" being a massive understatement here) go to CC Cleaner, learn how to use it and start cleaning from there, perhaps with some additional work with the app you suggested?

The problem is that there is no CC app on my taskbar and I'm no so sure where I should look to find the "master" CC app to install on the taskbar. I find that, unlike every other app which I've needed to uninstall, I just can't click on uninstall for these CC apps I must click on the CC icon on my taskbar. I was thinking that I should "manually" uninstall my CC apps from Control Panel (there's just the substantial CC and a CC Illustrator app, and then follow up with CC Cleaner. My Adobe incompetence has more than caught up with me. Both these can be obtained off your Adobe Account when you log in to it. You will need the Key from LR5 I think and the Key from 6. Then download LR6 and start from scratch. So, what I would do is clean out all lightroom stuff you have with the CC Cleaner tool and (say} Revo Uninstaller. LR 6 is available and if I remember it will only take one update to get to 6.14.
Jim, I had to go through a similar process recently when I had to replace my computer so don't lose hope. That’s what I tried but of course wrote overwrote my 6.12, demoting me to what might be 6.0 forever. When my download of 6.14 failed after several tries, I guessed that I must have to start from 6.0 and make 14 incremental updates. Yes, I made what may turn out to be a fatal error and I thought I’d noted that in my post but it may have been in my post on another forum (which received no responses).
